A little bit about the pictures I take and who I take them for

I work for various clients, photographing for magazine articles, conferences and websites. In my spare time, Brussels is my favourite subject and it always has something new to show me.

Adding photography to my writing is something I really appreciate, and editors get a complete package. Sure a picture says a thousand words, but if the words and pics work well together, then I’ve achieved something I’m really proud of.

Meetings and conferences are highly enjoyable, sometimes because the subject matter is interesting, or such as a recent conference on cervical cancer, I learn a lot about something new. Either way, it is a great opportunity for some portrait photography, where I try to capture the flavour of the event, the nature of the speakers.

Portraits are always fascinating. To be given a person and try to put them at ease, to tease out their real character and finally capture that essense in an image is a revalatory experience for myself and the subject.

Sometimes, I’m at one of the many parades and festivals and I get to see people celebrating, other times I’m photographing bars and restaurants for features.

Before moving to Brussels I specialised in mountain and travel photography, where I tried to show people what I felt about a place or to show them something completely different from their usual experiences.
Now, in my street photography, I try to keep myself out of the photo, trying to show what I see, what is really there in front of the lens. This produces images where people can read them in their own way without any attempt to influence or manipulate from the photographer.

The joy of photography is when you just know you’ve got a great image in the can, when reviewing the days photos something unexpected leaps out at you and when looking through my archives can bring back, a mood, an emotion or a lost memory.

I’m also find it exciting to be involved in something where you never stop learning, where there’s always something new or a different way of looking at a scene. Walking around the streets with a camera is a great way to get the feel for a city.
